HEIDELBERG CATECHISM QUESTIONS 83, 84 & 85
Question 83: What is the office of the keys?
Answer: The preaching of the holy gospel and Christian discipline. By these two means the kingdom of heaven is opened to believers, and shut against unbelievers.
Question 84: How is the kingdom of heaven opened and shut by the preaching of the holy gospel?
Answer: In this way: The kingdom of heaven is opened, when it is proclaimed and openly testified to believers, one and all, according to the command of Christ, that as often as they accept the promise of the gospel with true faith, all their sins are truly forgiven them by God, for the sake of Christ’s gracious work. On the contrary, the wrath of God and eternal condemnation, fall upon all unbelievers and hypocrites, as long as they do not repent. It is according to this witness of the gospel, that God will judge the one and the other, in this life and in the life to come.
Question 85: How is the kingdom of heaven shut and opened by Christian discipline?
Answer: In this way: Christ commanded that those who bear the Christian name in an unchristian way, either in doctrine or in life, should be given brotherly admonition. If they do not give up their errors or evil ways, notification is given to the church, or to those ordained for this by the church. Then, if they do not change after this warning, they are forbidden to partake of the holy sacraments, and are thus excluded from the communion of the church, and by God Himself from the kingdom of Christ. However, if they promise and show real amendment, they are received again as members of Christ, and of the church.

THE SERMON TITLE this morning is Who’s Right? One of our family’s favorite movie lines comes from a grade B Western starring Sam Elliott. He plays a rough-hewn villain with a gravelly voice who tells an Eastern, tenderfoot couple “The meek ain’t inheritin’ nothing west of St. Louis.” By default it seems that most folk in today’s world agree with Elliott’s character, though it’s doubtful they would state it with such direct clarity. Whatever we may think of that statement, it is in diametric opposition to an equally clear statement from Jesus. He says, “The meek shall inherit the earth.” Who’s right?
WE WELCOME DENNY BARGER BACKto Leidy’s Church as one of our Mission Month speakers. Leidy’s Church was Denny’s home church following his conversion several decades ago. Much water has gone under the bridge and over the dam since then, but we’re glad to have him share with us today.

HELP NEEDED. We are looking for individuals able to come alongside Pastor Andrew Edmonds and his wife Ann for the next couple of months. Ann was told she will need complete bed rest for the remaining two months of her pregnancy. Thanks in advance!
MORNING STAR MINISTRIES annual Bowl-A-Thon takes place on Saturday, April 10th. You can help support this ministry by seeking out one of our friendly 5th grade Sunday School participants and making a pledge. Or, on March 21st they will have a table in the narthex where donations may be made.
STRETCH YOUR PEA-BRAIN A BIT and come up with some good donations for the StormerLakeMission Auction! Your contribution does not have to be a novelty, it just needs to spark a bit of interest in at least two different bidders. In case you’re wondering, yes, “you” are included in the “your” of this announcement. It is a congregation-wide effort. If you have questions or ideas about the auction, please call the church office and stretch their pea-brains a bit! Donation forms may be found on the narthex desk.
LIVING HOPE NATIVE MINISTRIES 2010 BANQUET takes place Friday, March 26th at 6:30 p.m. at Yoder’s Restaurant, New Holland. There is no cost, but a free-will offering will be taken. To reserve a seat call 717-355-2747, or e-mail at Banquet@LHNM.org.
TAKE THE PLUNGE INTO THE LAKE that is, the Stormer Lake Mission Trip [SLMT] that takes off at 7 p.m. on July 8th from our parking lot. We need young folk, we need some older, more mature folk, we need skilled folk, and we need folk who simply are willing to be used by God wherever. Do seek the Lord Jesus about your participation this year.
THANKS TO THE FATHER/SON BANQUETcooks, servers, and workers who made last evening’s event delicious, relaxing, and thoroughly enjoyable. Well done.

WRITE-ON LETTER
(The following letter is a sample letter that addresses a subject of concern to all Christians. You should write a letter reflecting your views, making whatever adjustments may be necessary.)

Dear Ambassador Sanders or Baba Gana Wikil:
It was a great shock to receive news that more than 500 Christians, mostly women and children, were massacred during the middle of the night on March 7, 2010, in the Nigerian village of Dogo Nahawa. Though security officials had been warned by Governor Jonah John Jang about the potential for such an attack, and were notified when the attack began, they did nothing to stop the slaughter. When Christians from neighboring villages came to help, security officials stopped them, refusing them entrance to the village until 6 a.m.
Though reported in many media outlets as an outbreak of ethnic violence, the attackers were shouting Allah Akbar during this atrocity. It was, in fact, another violent action carried out as part of an Islamic Jihad against Christian minorities in northern Nigeria. In addition to the human lives taken, the mob also burned down church buildings of the Evangelical Church of West Africa, of the Church of Christ in Nigeria, and of the Roman Catholics.
I write this letter to seek your active intervention in whatever ways possible to bring the perpetrators of this killing to justice. By that I mean both those who did the killing and those who stood by, allowed it, and prevented help from reaching those being slaughtered. Additionally, I would ask you to use your position to work for better protection of the Christian minority in northern Nigeria.
Very truly yours,
